Lona Wilbur, Swinomish tribal member was elected as Democratic National Committee (DNC) person for the Washington State Democratic Party on Saturday, January 26, 2008.
Wilbur will be the youngest Democratic National Committee person from Washington State Democratic party to the DNC, and the 5th Native American to serve on the Democratic National Committee.
The election was held in Vancouver, Washington, where the 154 Democratic State Committee representatives elected two male and two female representatives. They will serve 4 year terms and will represent the Washington Democratic Party at the National level.
Wilbur, who lives in LaConner, comes from a family of long time leaders in the Democratic Party. Her grandparents were Tandy Wilbur, Sr. and Laura Wilbur and Raymond and Agnes Charles. Congress did not grant all Native Americans born in the United States citizenship until June, 2, 1924. This included Wilbur's grandparents, and she continues her family tradition of political activism.
