Quall to seek re-election to 40th District House seat

March 24, 2008

Dave Quall, Democrat, Mount Vernon, announced today that he will seek re-election to the State House of Representatives, 40th District.  He was first elected to the seat in 1992, and has served as the chair of the K-12 Education Committee for 11 years.  "No challenge in Washington state is larger than solving the education puzzle," said Quall, "and nothing is more satisfying working with leaders from our region to create new opportunities like the Skagit Skills Center and Career and Technical Education."

Quall also cites other recent legislative accomplishments during the 2008 session, including protection for Orca whales, funding for upland habitat at Wiley Slough, and improvements to mathematics education requirements, which are seen as key to building a workforce that can compete in the global economy.

Quall is well prepared to lead legislative consideration of education reforms and policies.  He is a retired Mount Vernon High School teacher and counselor with experience at Skagit Valley College as a coach and counselor.  Allene Quall taught elementary school for more than 30 years.  They have two daughters and six grandchildren, all of whom live in the area.

"I have seen a great many fads in education that have been around a couple years and then disappeared," said Quall.  "I bring a deep skepticism to discussions about quick fixes in education, and I believe that skepticism serves our state and our families well."

During the 2008 legislative session which ended last week, the Education Committee worked on developing rigorous math standards, and assistance for children with autism.

“As a retired teacher and counselor, education has been my focus.  We did good work this year on our mathematics education requirements, but we still have work to do,” stated Quall.

“I have enjoyed working with the people in our district to find solutions to local problems.  Whether the issue is agriculture, transportation, environment, or economic development, I believe in listening to everyone and trying to bring all parties together for a workable solution,” said Quall.
